To Make A Life Change, You Have To Understand Newton’s Law Of Motion First

It is all about inertia.

Isaac Newton, the physicist and mathematician, states the relationship between the motion of a body and the forces of the body according to his law of motion. Often, we will use this law to explain perceivable phenomena and to create technology. However, it can also be used to explain the common difficulty of life changes.

To understand how the law affects the parts of life, which is unperceivable, we have to understand the law first (or at least have an idea of it). The law is split into another three laws:

First law

Law of inertia — An object remains at rest when at rest unless an external force is applied upon it. If it is moving, it will continue moving at a constant velocity until acted upon by an unbalanced force.

Second law

Law of force — The vector sum of the forces (F) = The mass of the object (m) x The acceleration of the object (a).

Third law

Law of action and reaction — Every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

The Correlation

As we can understand, an object will only change its movement when there is a force applied to it. Also, there needs to be a certain amount of force being applied to change the direction of the initial movement to the desired direction due to inertia.

Similarly, in the change of mindset, habits, or similar, we can reason about the presence of inertia. As we live our lives every day, we constantly practice specific actions that started as difficult. And, as time goes by with consistent practices, inertia gets accumulated. Hence, these actions become second nature. In the effortlessness of those actions, we can easily forget the initial difficulty that we faced.

At the same time, we can fall into the trap of complaining about the difficulty when circumstances in our life changes. However, usually, new situations have a level of difficulty to overcome before we can adapt. And, as changes may be an inevident part of life, challenges will often be present. Concurrently, challenges often disappear as consistent effort is applied over time. Similar to the way of applying enough force to change the direction of a moving object.

The Point Of Breakthrough

In psychics, we may be able to calculate a numerical value of the force required to change the direction of a moving object. But, when it comes to mindset, habits, or similar, we may not have a gauge for the amount of effort we need to see desired results. However, that shouldn’t stop us from trying to come up with one.

In my opinion, the point of change/breakthrough is when we stop thinking about the result that we desired. Once our efforts created enough inertia to keep the result consistent, we tend to forget that we are required to put effort into making the result.

In other words, when the inertia is greater than our efforts, the desired change is made and effort is only needed to maintain the result. As such, as long as we persevere with consistency to accumulate the required inertia, we will eventually complete the desired change.

Minimizing The Effort

As there is a formula for everything, there should be a formula for minimizing the effort we need to make a change. Hence, I develop this formula:

Inertia required for change to set in/Point of breakthrough = Focus(%) x Effort

The amount of effort that is focused upon the change is the factor that will affect the change. With immersed unfocused effort, much effort will be wasted while making the change seem much difficult than it can be.

With focus, a minimum effort will be required to create the change as desired. Once we exceeded the inertia/point of breakthrough, we will have adopted a mindset, habit, or similar.

The Message

Change may be the only constant thing in this world. And, it may unavoidable. At the same time, learning and adapting to the new is usually difficult. However, that doesn’t mean we should give up on living because of the difficulty that is suggested.

On the flip side, there are also many parts of our lives that we have made easy unknowingly. Just as a toddler eventually learns to walk without caring about the number of times of fall, a person will eventually achieve his/her desires as he/she perseveres with focused effort.

As Newton’s law suggests, unless we apply some effort, nothing will move. As we move, there will be a counterforce that works against us. But, with significant effort in a specific direction, minor forces will not falter the intended direction. As such, with determination, focus, and effort, despite the initial roughness, any change can be attained as we will.
